The Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal presiding over a function to mark the centenary celebrations of Gadhar Akhbar organised by the Punjab Union of Journalists in village Sarabha (Ludhiana) on Friday.

Sarabha (Ludhiana), November 15, 2013: In a big relief to the journalist fraternity, the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today announced to constitute Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha Journalist Welfare Fund for bailing out the scribes during any hour of crisis.
Addressing the gathering during a function organised by Punjab Union of Journalist to mark the centenary of ‘Ghadar’ newspaper here at the native village of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha, the Chief Minister paid rich tributes to this great national hero who laid down his life at a tender age. He said that Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha was not only a true patriot but also a fearless and upright journalist who played a vanguard role in starting the ‘Ghadar’ newspaper for bringing awareness amongst the masses to uproot the cruel and mighty British Raj. Badal said that the Ghadar newspaper had set a benchmark for all the other newspapers to propagate the message of national unity and integrity in a fearless manner. “The media must follow the footsteps of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha in serving the country in true sense” he added.
Impressing upon the journalistic fraternity to pursue constructive agenda by shunning the tendency of negative reporting, the Chief Minister said that the media could act as an important catalyst in awakening the people against the social maladies by duly highlighting them. Acceding to the demand of the union, he said that the state government would soon constitute the Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha Journalist Welfare Fund to help the media persons to brave any odd in eventuality of any unforeseen circumstances. Mr. Badal also exhorted the journalists to make all out efforts for promoting the ethos of communal harmony, peace and brotherhood in the state, which was necessary for its overall development. Terming the media as the fourth pillar of democracy, the Chief Minister said that the journalist fraternity should make concerted efforts to highlight the social maladies faced by the country thereby awakening the people to eliminate them.
Lashing out at the Union government, the Chief Minister said that even after more than six decades of independence the successive Congress governments at the centre have ignored the enormous contribution of Punjabis in the national freedom struggle. He said that the Union government was meting out step motherly treatment to the state due to which the development of Punjab has suffered adversely. Advocating the true federal system for the country, Badal said that it would help in ensuring the holistic development of all the states.
The Chief Minister said that the Congress led Centre government have given a fatal blow to the federal structure of the country by continuously usurping the powers of the states. He said that the policies arbitrarily framed by the centre were resulting in lopsided development of the country due to which the nation was confronting with a large number of problems. Citing an example, Badal said that the hard working and resilient farmers of the state who have made the country self reliant in food production were on the verge of economic disaster due to the centre’s policy of excessive centralisation. “The centre’s decision to enhance the cost of agriculture inputs exorbitantly without giving remunerative MSP to the farmers has broken their backbone” he added.  Interacting with the media persons, the Chief Minister said that the Union government has forced the state government to impose property tax in the state. He said that if the states do not comply with the norms set by the Union government they stop the developmental grants to them as a result of which the growth of the state suffers. However Mr. Badal said that due care has been taken by them while levying this tax so that no burden is put on the people.
Later on the Chief Minister also presided over a sports tournament organised by Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha Sports Club.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by MLA Manpreet Singh Aiyaali, President Punjab Union of Journalists Jaspal Singh and President Punajb Saahit Academy Prof. Gurbhajan Gill.

Punjab News/Congress saving Tarun Tejpal - Grewal

National Secretary BJP Kisan Morcha Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal.

Ludhiana , November 24, 2013: National Secretary BJP Kisan Morcha Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal lashes out at Congress party saying that it sees no reason why a mere apology by Tarun Tejpal and stepping down for 6 months from the post of Editor-in-chief be accepted as sufficient.

In a statement here today, Grewal in fact held the Congress party responsible for trying to protect Tarun Tejpal by putting up a fake action. He added everybody is shocked and horrified at the latest revelations about acts of criminality by Tehelka Editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal.

He said that it is ironical that at a time when a state was being questioned for giving protection to a woman when her family sought protection and she was in complete knowledge of the same a woman journalist is being denied any help by the Congress or the authorities like the NCW and the Press Council of India.

Grewal said that there are the two situations involving two women cannot be compared the morality of the Congress and its surrogates can be questioned in handling the two situations. He said that the flip-flop of NCW and the Congress party on all such issues involving women is condemnable. He said when a young journalist who happens to be daughter of a senior journalist is seeking redressal of an abhorrent crime admittedly perpetrated by the Editor-in-chief himself some sections of the media choose to ignore her plea brushing the entire issue under the carpet.

Grewal said that it comes as a disturbing fact is that some of the media houses were busy writing and organising a campaign to harm the reputation of an innocent victim who had sought protection to protect her honour and dignity at a time she was well-settled in her married life and pleaded for anonymity. He said that clearly it seems to be a case of political vendetta to settle scores by side stepping the key issues like governance and corruption and scams. He said that if the Congress party points a finger on the Gujarat Government for having provided security to a woman to protect her from such crimes. He said why has it remained silent on the 9 MLAs in Rajasthan who are facing serious charges like rape, murder, and sexual assault. He said that the cases relating to Rajasthan Ministers like Parasnath Maderna have failed to elicit a response from either the Congress party or its surrogates.

Grewal said that the conduct of Tarun Tejpal falls under the category of rape as per the amended law in 2013, Sexual assault of this nature would fall within the definition of rape under Section 375 of the IPC.

He said even though Tarun Tejpal has admitted to having committed the crime sending him away from Tehelka is not a befitting punishment at all considering the serious nature and assault on his own woman staffer.

Also, he said in the end, while the dignified ladies from the Congress party were anointing themselves as a guardian to a woman who sought anonymity, sensationalising her ordeal, dragging her in the newspapers and TV channels, a serious crime, admittedly perpetrated by a senior Editor-in-chief is being ignored by the Congress party.  The least they can do is to demand registration of a criminal case against Tarun Tejpal. He said that the woman journalist in Tehelka in her e-mail to Shoma Chaudhary has revealed the perverse criminal behaviour and nature. He said that the issue needs to be taken to a logical conclusion so that such acts do not recur in future. Will Tehelka answer if a mechanism to prevent sexual harassment at work place, in keeping with the legal provisions, was put in place in their media organisation. He said that Tarun Tejpal has been accused of sexually assaulting a junior journalist during the think festival in Goa. Chief Minister Goa Manohar Parrikar has already ordered a probe and the police may summon Tarun Tejpal for trial under criminal offences.
